  1.                        INSTALLATION AND STARTUP GUIDE FOR
  2.     
  3.                              OWL BASIC BOOKKEEPING
  4.                                   VERSION 2.1
  5.     
  6.     
  7.     This  guide  covers  installation  and startup of OWL Basic Bookkeeping 
  8.     Version  2.xx.  The complete User's Guide is built into the program and 
  9.     is  accessed  by  selecting the "User's Guide" option.  In order to get 
  10.     the  most  benefit from this program, we strongly suggest that you read 
  11.     the user's guide.
  12.     
  13.     SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  14.     
  15.          OWL  Basic  Bookkeeping Version 1.0 requires an IBM Compatible PC, 
  16.          DOS 2.1 or above, a hard disk and 512k of available RAM memory.  
  17.          
  18.     DOS CONFIGURATION
  19.     
  20.          For  proper  operation of all functions, the program requires that 
  21.          the  number of DOS file handles be set to 20 or more.  This number 
  22.          is  established  when  you  boot  your  computer and is derived as 
  23.          either  a  default  value  or  from the standard file "CONFIG.SYS" 
  24.          which  must  reside  in  the  root directory of your start-up disk 
  25.          drive.   For proper operation, you MUST HAVE the file "CONFIG.SYS" 
  26.          in  the  root  directory of your start-up disk and it MUST contain 
  27.          the  line  "FILES=20"  (values  above  20  are  acceptable for DOS 
  28.          version  3.3  or  above).   Assuming  your  start-up disk is the C 
  29.          drive,  you  can  create  this  file  very  quickly  by typing the 
  30.          following:
  31.          
  32.               COPY CON: C:\CONFIG.SYS
  33.               FILES=20
  34.               Ctrl-Z      (Press "Ctrl" and "Z" keys together)
  35.          
  36.          If  file  CONFIG.SYS already exists, use a text editor to view and 
  37.          modify  the  file  as  needed.   Once you have added or edited the 
  38.          "CONFIG.SYS"  file, YOU MUST RE-BOOT your computer for the changes 
  39.          to   take   effect.    Consult  your  DOS  manual  for  additional 
  40.          information.

  42.     UPGRADING FROM AN EARLIER VERSION
  43.     
  44.          BEFORE  INSTALLING  THIS  VERSION  OF  BASIC  BOOKKEEPING run your 
  45.          present  version of BBK and select the "BACKUP" option in the File 
  46.          menu to save your data to a floppy disk.  
  47.          
  48.     INSTALLATION (From Distribution Disk)
  49.     
  50.          To  install,  upgrade or reinstall OWL Basic Bookkeeping place the 
  51.          distribution disk in drive A and type the following commands:
  52.          
  53.               A:          (Type "B:" to install from the B drive)
  54.               INSTALLB C  (To  install  onto  the  C  drive.  To install to 
  55.                           another  drive, replace "C" with the drive letter 
  56.                           of the desired drive)
  57.     
  58.          Basic  Bookkeeping  will  be installed in subdirectory \OWL of the 
  59.          designated hard disk drive.
  60.          
  61.          IMPORTANT:   If you are upgrading from an earlier version of Basic 
  62.          Bookkeeping  that  is  already installed in the \OWL subdirectory, 
  63.          special  instructions will be displayed. The instructions tell you 
  64.          what   keys   to  press  to  install  the  new  version  of  Basic 
  65.          Bookkeeping while retaining your existing bookkeeping data files.
  66.          
  67.          If  your  earlier  version  was  installed in a subdirectory other 
  68.          than  \OWL  on  the  designated hard disk or you make a mistake in 
  69.          following   the   instructions,   you   may   move  your  existing 
  70.          bookkeeping  data  to  the  new version by selecting the "RESTORE" 
  71.          option when running the new version of Basic Bookkeeping.

  74.     INSTALLATION (From BBS DOWNLOAD)
  75.     
  76.          If  you  downloaded OWL Basic Bookkeeping from a bulletin board or 
  77.          other  data  service,  you  will  have already extracted all files 
  78.          from  the  ZIP  or  other  archive  file you downloaded.  Create a 
  79.          directory  on  your  hard drive named "\OWL" to hold the extracted 
  80.          files  and  copy  all extracted files to the new directory.  Note:  
  81.          the  original  ZIP or other archive file should be stored off on a 
  82.          floppy disk and kept as a backup.

  84.     RUNNING THE PROGRAM
  85.     
  86.          To  run  the  OWL  Basic  Bookkeeping  program  type the following 
  87.          commands:
  88.          
  89.               C:
  90.               CD \OWL
  91.               BBK
  92.          
  93.          If  you  installed  the  program  on  a  hard  drive other than C, 
  94.          substitute the appropriate drive letter for "C" in the above.
  95.     
  96.     SAMPLE DATA
  97.     
  98.          The  data files shipped with the program contain sample data which 
  99.          is  provided  to help you become familiar with the various options 
  100.          and  capabilities of the program.  The sample data covers calendar 
  101.          year 1993.
  102.     
  103.     TROUBLE SHOOTING
  104.  
  105.          The   following  is  a  brief  list  of  errors  that  may   be
  106.          encountered and what to do about them.
  107.   
  108.          Out  of  Memory  or Low Memory:  You don't have  enough  memory
  109.          below  640K to run the program.  If your computer has at  least
  110.          512K  of  RAM, you should be able to eliminate this problem  by
  111.          removing  memory resident programs (TSR'S) and  device  drivers
  112.          (mouse drivers, network drivers, etc.) to free up memory.
  113.   
  114.          Program  Aborts with Message (DOS error 04):  This  means  that
  115.          insufficient  DOS  file handles have been  specified.   If  you
  116.          have  already  added the line FILES=31 to your CONFIG.SYS  file
  117.          AND rebooted your computer, try increasing the number a few  at
  118.          a  time.   Reboot  your  computer each time  you  increase  the
  119.          number.
  120.           
  121.          Program  Locks  up  or  screen becomes  distorted:   The  mouse
  122.          display  software  in  BBK  can   cause   problems  with   some
  123.          displays.   Adding  switches to the  command  line  that  cause
  124.          BBK  to  use  a non-graphic  mouse  cursor can sometimes  solve
  125.          this problem.  Try running BBK with the following command:
  126.   
  127.               BBK /nv /ng
  128.   
  129.          Mouse  doesn't work:  Your mouse driver is probably  quite  old
  130.          and  out  of  date.  Contact your mouse vendor for  an  updated
  131.          driver.
  132.   
  133.          Other  Errors:   If  at any time you are unable  to  resolve  a
  134.          problem   with  this  program,  call  or  write  us  a   letter
  135.          explaining  the nature of the problem.  Please also  include  a
  136.          description  of your computer configuration including  any  TSR
  137.          programs which are installed.  Send all correspondence to:
